Are There Good Alternatives to Lasik?
Even though Lasik is a relatively safe and speedy procedure, it is not for everyone. For instance, there’s a criteria followed by eye doctors to determine if you are a good Lasik candidate. If you can’t get Lasik for any reason, you would want to know about alternatives to Lasik that work just as well, if not better, than Lasik.
The two most widely used alternatives to Lasik procedures are Ortho-K and ICL.
Ortho-K or orthokeratology is a non-surgical alternative to Lasik that has been approved by the FDA fairly recently. It can correct nearsightedness and astigmatism without the need for excising or cutting your cornea open. It is generally considered a safer alternative.
With ortho-K, patients are given custom-made contact lenses that apply gentle pressure to the cornea to reshape it. The cornea is made longer or flatter depending on the vision condition being corrected. The patient is made to wear these corrective contact lenses for several days or weeks to effectively reshape the cornea.
The other common alternative to Lasik is ICL or implantable contact lens. This procedure involves implanting a pliable lens just behind the iris. A small incision is made to insert this lens inside your eyes, and the implanted contact stays there forever. This is usually used to correct extreme cases of myopia. The success rate is relatively high at around 95 percent. It may be worth considering this procedure before you consider Lasik correction
Like any other procedure, check if the doctor you consult with is licensed and experienced to perform the surgery. There are plenty of alternatives alternative to Lasik procedures that you can go for, which might save you some money and the possible irreversible risks of Lasik. Ask your eye doctor about all possible procedures available to you so that you can pick the most suitable procedure for your situation.
